Publications

Dear colleague

Following our discussions during the First International Conference on African and Arabian Geoparks (FICAAG) in Morocco last November, we are pleased to inform you that our request to have a Geoheritage Journal special volume, with selected papers and, a separate Springer-Verlag Book and we have authorization to officially commence work on these Special Issues dedicated to the papers presented during the conference.

As you would be aware, the FICAAG brought together a wide variety of papers from different part of the world and especially from Africa and the Arab world dealing with geoconservation, geoheritage, and geoparks, and ranging from that outlining the history of geoconservation, geoheritage, and geoparks, descriptions of existing geosites of geoheritage significance, the definition of the various types of geoparks globally, toolkits to help identify and develop geosites and geoparks, case studies of some existing geoparks, and the management of existing geoparks. All papers, even those outside of Africa and its neighboring countries, can be tailored to illustrate theory and application of techniques to develop geosites and geoparks.

Rather than just selecting few papers from the Conference, we believe that producing Special Publications as a book published by Springer-Verlag dedicated to the outcomes of the FICAAG will be an excellent opportunity to promote geoconservation, geoheritage, and geoparks through the use of thematic and regional issues to illustrate the scope and depth of geoheritage being pursued in Africa and bordering countries, and the techniques and management practices that can be applied to Africa and its bordering countries from experiences elsewhere. To this objective, we are aiming to produce two types of volumes:

1. a number of selected papers will be published in a dedicated Special Issue of Geoheritage Journal,

2. all papers  presented at the conference (if the authors are willing to further expand them), after a peer review including those which published in Geoheritage special volume will be published in the book to be published by Springer-Verlag; these will be papers of minimum six-pages length.

Please identify in the accompanying questionnaire if you would like to submit your paper(s) to the Special Issue ofGeoheritage as well as the book or to one or the other.

Please note all contributions will need to be written (or translated) in English.

Contribution to the Geoheritage Journal will need to be full length papers. Contributions to the book need to be minimum 6 pages (A4) in length with high quality illustrations. Could you kindly complete the attached questionnaire as we need to know whether you wish to contribute to the book and the number of pages you would like your contribution to be because as Guest Editors for the book, we need to fill out some preliminary pre-publications forms for Springer-Verlag.

We also attach here a proposed schedule of milestones and guest editors to achieve the objectives of producing these Special Publications.

If possible, could you kindly return the completed questionnaire no later than the 15th June 2012. The 'Instructions to Authors' for the geoheritage journal are available on the following link :http://www.springer.com/earth+sciences+and+geography/geology/journal/12371.

For the Springer-Verlag book, the 'Instructions to Authors' will be posted in the near future on www.africangeoparksnetwork.org.

Yours sincerely

Ezzoura Errami, Margaret Brocx and Vic Semeniuk
